Determination of inorganic ions in aqueous infusions was studied by photometric ion chromatography (PIC) using a conventional HPLC system equipped with a UV monitor. Inorganic cations (Na^+, K^+, Mg^<2+> and Ca^<2+>) could be separated on a strong cation exchange column, Oyobunko ASC-4000 column (4.6 mm i. d.×250 mm), with 1×10^<-4> M CuSO_4 for Na^+, K^+ and 2×10^<-3> M CuSO_4 for Mg^<2+>, Ca^<2+> as eluents, and detected at 220 nm. Inorganic anions (Cl^-, PO_4^<3-> and SO_4^<2->) could be separated on a strong anion exchange column, Oyobunko ASA-4000 column (4.6 mm i. d.×250 mm), with 1×10^<-3> M disodium phthal- ate (pH 10) as an eluent, and detected at 260 nm. A sample solution was simply diluted with distilled water, and could be analyzed by PIC. Relative standard deviations (n=5) for above ions in a commercial infusion were below 2.0%.
