In 2012, Central Education Council of Japan has recommended the introduction of active-learning methods to university education. Following this recommendation, Kanazawa University has decided to introduce active-learning methods to its new liberal arts curriculum, which will be started in 2016. In this paper, the author, discusses the rationale for the introduction of active-learning techniques in her English classes, and reports some classroom practices which she found useful in engaging students in student-entered activities. She argues that assessing the learning objectives of courses to which active-learning methods may be introduced, and deciding appropriate activities to suit the objectives are important. Without such considerations, the introduction of active-learning methods itself will become the goal of introducing active-learning methods.
