In this study, we conduct several experiments in composting with forced aeration, using a small, cylindrical reactor, and propose a practical method for estimating the heat generation rate. This simple method does not involve highly technical measurements but applies only the temperature measured in the compost materials to heat and moisture balance equations. The heat generation rates estimated using this method agree well with the results estimated from oxygen consumption rates. The amount of biologically decomposed organic matter also agrees well with the measured results. Therefore, the validity of this method is confirmed.
