          <datacite:description descriptionType="Abstract">Wheels of an unfilled isoprene rubber(unfilled IR) and a carbon-black-filled natural rubber(filled NR) were rubbed against a cylinder or a razor blade, and the formation mechanisms of abrasion patterns and the wear mechanisms of rubber were examined. 
  When the abrasion patterns were formed on the rubber surfaces, small particles by roll-formation were observed in the early stage of wear. They grew up to relatively large in size and adhered to the rubber surface. Then cracks were formed just beneath the front portion of the adhered particles and grew large to form a series of the abrasion patterns having saw teeth. During motion of the slider the teeth are bent backwards, thus exposing their underside to the action of the slider. So the wear of the underside portions and tearing of their ridges seem to be important as well as the crack growth. Pattern abrasion tends to occur at high loads and on rough rubber surfaces. The other hand oily wear debris was produced under low loads and on smooth rubber surfaces. Pattern abrasion for the unfilled IR was observed at higher loads than that for the filled NR. It may represent the easy oxidation of the unfilled IR compared to the filled NR.</datacite:description>
