It has been frequently reported that the cracks in the vertical direction occured in the mass concrete. The cracks may mainly be caused by the thermal stresses arising from the restraint of the contraction of concrete at the heat dissipation. The measurements of the temperature and strains in a massive concrete reservoir were carried out to reveal the effect of the temperature rise on the tensile stresse induced on the surface of the concrete structure, giving the fundamental data for the control of cracking in massive concrete.
