The Matsugadani bridge is the first highway bridge in Japan to which the plastic design method was applied. The main problems which must be considered in the plastic design of bridge structures in addition to the elastic design are: 1) the plastic failure subjected to a maximum load once only, 2) the incremental collapse under variable repeated loads, and 3) the low cycle fatigue under alternating plastic loads.
