Basal diameter, plant height, and the number of leaflets were signifi-cantly correlated with biomass. Light intensity on the forest floor decreased from spring to early summer. Ari-saema serratum emerged and completed the leaf expansion prior to canopy closure. Smaller sized individuals showed earlier leaf emergence and expansion than larger sized ones within a population. The onset date of leaf emergence as well as the date of leaf expansion was found to be significantly correlated with plant size.
