The subjects were 63 elderly people living in the community with a mean age of 77.4 years old（90.5% were female）, including those in need of elderly nursing care（12.7%）. Analyses were conducted to examine the relationships between the elderly’s awareness of the necessity of support and other influencing factors, including their attributes, activities of daily living, the status of health management, awareness of disaster prevention, and disaster prevention behaviors. Furthermore, knowledge regarding disaster prevention was explained to individual elderly people to encourage them to discuss disaster prevention measures, and disaster prevention and health education, including trying emergency food, was provided to promote health management of the elderly to prepare for disasters and improve their skills for self and mutual support, based on their experiences of evacuation. The responses from 55 elderly subjects were examined to compare their awareness prior to and following the implementation of education, and its influences were also analyzed. 　Approximately 60% of the 63 elderly people were aware of the necessity of support, and this awareness was significantly influenced by the following factors： a long period of living in their homes, having no stored food or drink, and being able to estimate the time required for evacuation. The results suggested that the necessity of support was influenced by duration of residence and disaster prevention behaviors. Following the implementation of education, there was a significant improvement in the awareness of the necessity of support, with more than 80% of the elderly subjects being aware of its necessity. Furthermore, there were significant increases in the rates of the elderly that carried oral medicine or a medicine notebook, recognized that they may experience disasters, and were afraid that they may not be able to receive support from their neighbors.
