| 内容記述 | This essay attempts to explore a practical understanding of English education in elementary schools which is to be officially carried out starting in 2011. English education for children under 12 has been a very contentious issue. While its advocates suggest that the early instruction will alleviate students’ anxiety about English conversation, and improve their communicative competence both in English and Japanese, some academics—linguists, literary critics, and cultural sociologists—strenuously oppose its introduction on the ground of significance, validity, and cultural effects. The great discrepancy between the two parties is partly caused by an easy and inattentive employment of big words such as language, communication, and culture. The meanings of those words are so ambiguous that the discussion about English education is likely to get us nowhere and may even disrupt teachers’ orientation toward English class. The categorization of the words suggested in the essay is expected to provide an objective viewpoint from which an instructor can more properly understand his/her own class as well as an overview of Japanese English education. | |||||
