HSP70 (a stress protein) and purpurin (a retinol-binding protein) were rapidly induced in the fish retina after optic nerve injury. HSP70 was involved in cell survival of injured retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), whereas purpurin was involved in neurite sprouting from injured RGCs.
