 note = {本研究は米国社会と文学における「失敗者」と「逸脱者」の表象に着目する。米国の特徴は「成功」に取り憑かれた社会であること。またその歴史は少数の「成功者」のあり方を重要な規範とすることで発展してきた。だが国家の物語は「その他多数」を構成する、様々な意味の「失敗者」や「逸脱者」が残した「顧みられない歴史」の中にも存在する。当研究は「成功者」と「失敗者」の両面を生きた、後者の心情をより深く熟知したマーク・トウェインやウィリアム・ディーン・ハウエルズなどの作家が残した文学作品の中に、また実際の「失敗者」や「逸脱者」が残した文書に、「困難を生きた多数」の記憶と記録が紡ぎ出す「国民の物語」の重要性を探る。, This study focuses on the representations of "losers" and "deviants" in American society and her literature. America is a society obsessed with success. And her history has developed by making a small number of successful people as their important role models. The story of the nation, however, also exists in the neglected history left by the society's "losers" and "deviants," who constituted what is termed "many others."
