This functional impairment has negative effects on activities of daily living. On the other hand, the sitting position is the starting position for sit-to-stand movement. Sit-to-stand movement requires stability and controllability of the trunk, especially smooth forward leaning movement of the trunk and the pelvis. This review discusses: 1) the characteristics of the sitting position in the elderly; 2) the effects of aging on mobility of the pelvis in the sitting position; and 3) the importance of pelvic mobility in sit-to-stand movement in patients with hemiplegia.
