However, such sentences can occasionally be observed in fictional conversations in Franz Kafka's works. The following is one example:\n\"You think you have strength enough to come over here and that you're only hanging back of your own accord.\" (Franz Kafka: The Judgment) In such an utterance the speaker (the father) expresses verbally what he claims to see through or in the mind of his interlocutor (his son) in order to gain an advantage in their interpersonal relationship. Such an utterance can be called a \"seeing-through utterance\" (Nishijima 2005; 2015). Seeing-through utterances seem to be used in Kafka's works as interpersonal games in conversations between characters. Thus, it can be hypothesized that seeing-through utterances are used as wordplay in interpersonal games in order for the speakers to display certain of their attitudes to their interlocutors. The aim of the present paper is twofold: (a) to analyze some seeing-through utterances in several works of Franz Kafka, (b) to demonstrate that they are used as wordplay, i.e., a psychological trick to display the power of the speaker over the interlocutor. The analysis of seeing-through utterances can be expected to shed light on an unknown aspect of wordplay in the fictional conversations of Franz Kafka.","subitem_description_type":"Abstract"}]},"item_7_heading_33":{"attribute_name":"見出し","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_heading_banner_headline":"論考・研究ノート","subitem_heading_language":"ja"}]},"item_7_identifier_registration":{"attribute_name":"ID登録","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_identifier_reg_text":"10.24517/00053895","subitem_identifier_reg_type":"JaLC"}]},"item_7_publisher_17":{"attribute_name":"出版者","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_publisher":"金沢大学国際基幹教育院外国語教育系"}]},"item_7_publisher_19":{"attribute_name":"出版者(別名)","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_publisher":" Faculty of Foreign Language Studies, Institute of Liberal Arts and Science, Kanazawa University "}]},"item_7_source_id_9":{"attribute_name":"ISSN","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"2436-3464","subitem_source_identifier_type":"ISSN"}]},"item_7_version_type_25":{"attribute_name":"著者版フラグ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_version_resource":"http://purl.org/coar/version/c_970fb48d4fbd8a85","subitem_version_type":"VoR"}]},"item_creator":{"attribute_name":"著者","attribute_type":"creator","attribute_value_mlt":[{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"Nishijima, Yoshinori"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"80118","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"},{"nameIdentifier":"20242539","nameIdentifierScheme":"e-Rad","nameIdentifierURI":"https://kaken.nii.ac.jp/ja/search/?qm=20242539"}]}]},"item_files":{"attribute_name":"ファイル情報","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"accessrole":"open_date","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2019-04-17"}],"displaytype":"detail","filename":"AA11128602-23-109-128.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"329.2 kB"}],"format":"application/pdf","licensetype":"license_11","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"label":"2436-3464-23-109-128.pdf","url":"https://kanazawa-u.repo.nii.ac.jp/record/47571/files/AA11128602-23-109-128.pdf"},"version_id":"d449590e-b4f4-4fdd-aca0-fe07d72d9115"}]},"item_keyword":{"attribute_name":"キーワード","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_subject":"seeing-through utterance","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"second person assertive","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"thinking verb","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"internal world","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"interpersonal game","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"psychological trick","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"Franz Kafka","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"fictional conversation","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"}]},"item_language":{"attribute_name":"言語","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_language":"eng"}]},"item_resource_type":{"attribute_name":"資源タイプ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"departmental bulletin paper","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501"}]},"item_title":"“Seeing-Through Utterance” as Wordplay: Interpersonal Games in Fictional Conversations of Franz Kafka","item_titles":{"attribute_name":"タイトル","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_title":"“Seeing-Through Utterance” as Wordplay: Interpersonal Games in Fictional Conversations of Franz Kafka"}]},"item_type_id":"7","owner":"3","path":["3681"],"pubdate":{"attribute_name":"公開日","attribute_value":"2019-04-17"},"publish_date":"2019-04-17","publish_status":"0","recid":"47571","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["“Seeing-Through Utterance” as Wordplay: Interpersonal Games in Fictional Conversations of Franz Kafka"],"weko_creator_id":"3","weko_shared_id":3},"updated":"2023-07-27T15:23:46.800058+00:00"}
