Of interest in this particular essay is the approach of his argument, which chooses to apply and juxtapose ex.istential questions to his interpretation of a Japanese folktale. Heam traveled to Hakata and encountered a heap of old bronze mirrors, donations from believers for the casting of a ceremonial statue of Buddha, in one of the city's temples. Heam confesses his regret for the destiny of the mirrors, writing that they must have at one time reflected the faces of the women who possessed them. He cannot help but imagine that their souls were still haunting the bronze. Referring to the Japanese belief in the ghostliness of mirror, he then introduces us to the story of\"Matsuyama Mirror,\" which features a girl who believes her deceased mother can be seen in the mirror that she gave to the girl just before her death. \nHearn's sympathy for the girl's innocent belief cannot be doubted. However, his text shows that his belief is not the same as hers. Rather, it suggests that he recognizes in the story the innermost necessity of the human mind to imagine or infer the continuance of the soul after death. \nThis article proposes that his somewhat obscure style in \"At Hakata\" should be read within the context of Herbert Spencer's agnosticism. In First Principles, Spencer argues that our intelligence is supported by a vague sense of the Ultimate Existence, which we need to represent in some form of thought or symbolism, and that doing so impels us to greater morality. One important aspect of\"At Hakata\" is that it makes various efforts to describe this intrinsic tendency of the human mind.
