Norikura in Gifu Prefecture. In S. commixta, flowering firstly started in populations at low elevation and gradually progressed to those at higher elevations. By contrast, S. matsumurana populations in upper alpine belt bloomed earlier than those in lower alpine belt. Since alpine plants have to complete their reproductive processes during a short summer season, earlier blooming might be adaptive in the alpine habitat.
