In general, a greeting is to be responded to with an equivalent expression. However, a response to irassyaimase is not expected. Such a greeting expression is thus called an “unreplyable utterance.” The aim of this study is threefold: (1) to observe how the expression irassyaimase is used in banks, shops, and stores in Japan; (2) to point out that it is not always intended for substantial communication, that is, it is used as an unreplyable utterance; and (3) to reveal that such expressions are generally used to create an atmosphere of caring for customers, despite being a one-way communication compared to corresponding situations in Western countries such as Germany.
