One\nmechanism of pressure injuries is a lack of oxygen and nutrition supply due to the\nblocking of peripheral blood flows. Skin cells can absorb oxygen from the air; therefore,\nit is considered that a preventive effect on the development of pressure injuries can be\nobtained by supplying oxygen topically to the compressed area. In this study, we discuss\npressure injury prevention via the supply of oxygen (room air or 100% oxygen) to the\ncompressed skin of a hairless rat for the purpose of preventing a lack of oxygen in the\nskin cells.\n As a result, the area of redness and incidence rate of pressure ulcers in the compressed\nareas were smaller in the room air group and 100% oxygen group, when compared to a\ncontrol group. In particular, in the 100% oxygen group, there was no ulcer incidence and\nthe period of sustained skin redness was shorter.\n Although it is reported that excessive oxygen supply produces a toxic effect on human\ncells, the pure oxygen group showed the most effective results in the present study. If\nposture is to be fixed for a long time, e.g. for an operation, topical oxygen supply to the\ncompressed skin area may be effective.
