| 内容記述 | Many recent studies have explored gender bias in schools and learning materials, and their potential influence on students’ gender perceptions. This study investigates gender bias in textbooks approved by the governments of Japan and Mauritania for nationwide use in both countries. It uses a quantitative, textual analysis of two criteria related to women’s visibility in textbooks: the number of women in pictorial representations and the type and number of activities they perform. This study investigated whether there is a gender bias in the representation of women in Mauritania’s government-issued English textbooks (2019) as well as Japan’s government-approved English textbooks (2020), and compared which country’s English textbooks more adequately represent women in accordance with the gender equality goals set by the governments of both countries. The results of the study revealed that there is male dominance in the textbook series of both countries, and that Mauritania has a significantly larger gender gap than Japan. The overall representation of women in Japanese textbooks was also found to be significantly improved compared to the gender gap in English textbooks published in 2006 (Ishikawa, 2012). The findings show that while the Japanese government’s goals are moving in the right direction, they fall short in Mauritania and that Mauritania, specifically, should promote more equal portrayals in its learning materials. | |||||
