The earthquake caused much havoc in thirteen prefectures from Hokkaido to Yamaguchi Prefesture but mostly in coast districts in Akita and Aomori Prefectures. Lifeline systems were also damaged extensively. Lifeline systems are necessary to the sustenance and well being of human life. The object of this paper is to give an outline of the damage to lifeline systems and their restoration. On the basis of the field investigation, the following teachings may be drawn : (1) It is necessary to establish the countermeasure of mitigating the damage of lifelines due to soil liquefaction. (2) Soil liquefaction potential against earthquakes must be evaluated.
