Mg# (=Mg/(Mg+Fe^\u003c2+\u003e) atomic ratio) is sensitive, both to Mg# of the rock or magma system, and to temperature change. Cr# (=Cr/(Cr+Al) atomic ratio) is less sensitive than Mg# to temperature change but is a good indicator of the original igneous petrological characteristics of the rocks. The Cr# of chromian spinel in mantle peridotites can be widely variable (from less than 0.1 to more than 0.9) according to the degree of magma extraction, but the range of Fe^\u003c3+\u003e ratio is limited (usually less than 0.1). In cumulates and mafic volcanics the Cr# and the Fe^\u003c3+\u003e ratio of chromian spinel can also be widely variable depending on magma chemistry. The TiO_2 content of chromian spinel in volcanics is a good guide to magma species (island-arc, intraplate or mid-oceanic ridge). Low-grade metamorphism enriches the original chromianspinel with a magnetite (Fe^\u003c2+\u003e Fe^\u003c3+\u003e_2O_4) component and depletes it in a spinel (MgAl_2O_4) component. The chemical compositions of detrital chromian spinels are very useful in determining their provenance. Chemistry and provenance of detrital chromian spinels in sandstones associated with serpentinite complexes from three areas were examined. Chromian spinels in sediments could be chemically different from those in constituent rocks of the neighbouring serpentinite complex if vertical tectonic movement of deep-seated rocks had been continuing in that area.
