Particularly in the Sea of Japan, radioactive waste disposal by the former Soviet Union during the I 970s and I 980s became apparent in I 993. Therefore, to assess the effect of the disposal in the Sea of Japan, radioactive monitoring in deep sea environments has been conducted every year since I 996 on the R/V (Research Vessel) Soyo Maru expedition (National Research Institute of Fisheries Science), in addition to the previous conventional surface/coastal monitoring. In the present paper, we exhibit the sampling techniques for seawater (CTD-RMS), marine sediment (core samplers), biota (deep sea pods and benthos nets), and sinking particles (sediment traps) for deep-sea environmental monitoring.
