内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 This work translates four letters (dated 3 December 1514, 15 December 1514, 30 December 1514, and 16 January 1515), which were written by Francesco Vettori, a wealthy Florentine noble and politician, and a friend of Niccolò Machiavelli. These four letters as well as five responses to them made by Machiavelli are part of a historically valuable collection of some forty-one letters exchanged between the two friends.
The letters show that, over a number of months, Machiavelli appealed to Vettori to help him to rehabilitate himself within official Florentine circles. In response, Vettori appeared to be reluctant to help by stating that he did not have sufficient power and influence to fulfill Machiavelli’s wish. Nonetheless, the nine letters show that Vettori in fact tried, somewhat hesitantly, to assist his friend by introducing him to leading members of the powerful Medici family.
In particular, Machiavelli’s newfound acquaintance with Cardinal Giulio de Medici (later Pope Clement VII) proved to be one of the most important developments of his later life. It was a crucial factor in helping the Florentine to turn his life around. As a result of winning the Cardinal’s favor, Machiavelli was nominated to write the official “Florentine Histories”. The Italian philosopher also played a central role as provisor and chancellor in a new magistracy to oversee the renewal of Florence’s walls and fortifications. These important positions illustrated Machiavelli’s successful return to official life in the city. The translation of the letters in this work contributes to a better understanding of the peaks and troughs of Machiavelli’s life.
