内容記述 | This research explores students’ perception of first-year English classes at Kanazawa University, examining how they feel about the language used in the classroom (i.e., Japanese monolingual, Japanese/English bilingual, or English immersion), the instructor (native English speaker or non-native), and the correlation of the two. As a preliminary inquiry, a questionnaire was distributed to a sample student population. The result shows a strong preference for bilingual classes as well as an opportunity to take classes taught by native and non-native instructors. Also, comparing students’ response in bilingual and monolingual classes taught by Japanese instructors, students in the bilingual class show a more positive response to non-native instructor’s use of English and a more open-mindedness towards accented English. Considering these preliminary results, this paper suggests the importance of English classes conducted mainly in English by a Japanese instructor, for its possibility of transforming students’ attitudes towards English as a lingua franca. | |||||
